Order in the Court! (Module III)

Chapters 7 and 13 were the readings assigned for this module. Chapter 7, the first chapter of Part II in our textbook, is Behavioral Views of Learning. The first half of this chapter covered the different types of conditioning and learning, a lot of which I learned in previous psychology classes. Concepts such as positive and negative reinforcement, operant and classic conditioning, extinction, punishment are theories that make returns to my reading. Chapter 7 also goes into practical use of these theories in the classroom and in life, which is brand new, to me, and incredibly useful and helpful. Chapter 13, the first chapter in Part III, is Creating Learning Environments. Just as the title states, it talks about what a good learning environment is, how to create one, maintaining one and how to deal with issues in the classroom.

What grabbed my attention the most were the sections about student discipline. A lot of what I read will be very useful as a full-time teacher. Unfortunately I cannot use some of these as a substitute, like having a student wait after class to talk. Luckily, I have not had many problematic students but running into a misbehaving student is something I know I will see more of as I move into the education setting full time. The reason that these sections grabbed my attention the most is because I have always wondered how to go about discipline. As a striving junior high and high school teacher, more so with the latter group of students, I am worried about the students' willingness to listen to a young teacher. I also am a very easy going person, and sometimes I fear that there will always be certain students who feel that they can overstep their boundaries. These sections in chapters 7 and 13 gave me good insight on how to handle these potential situations.

  1. These chapters grabbed my attention too. I know we will be learning each year we teach but it is good to gather as much information as we can before we teach. I'm glad we are getting some insight on student discipline and classroom environment. Chapter seven talked about positive and negative reinforcement which I wasn't sure how to go about it in a classroom especially since things have changed so much since I was in school. Even though we are learning about ways to have good classroom management I'm still worried until I get enough experience.

  2. These were my favorite two chapters so far. These are ones that I can actually use in a special education class. I noticed some of the things that we are learning in this class as well as other classes have not been helpful in the class that I'm in now, which is a K-1 Life skills class. But there a couple of other chapters in this educational psychology class that will be helpful but 7 and 13 by far, have been the most useful.

  3. Jay, I am there with you as far as worrying about how students will respond to you as a new teacher. There are always going to be some students to cause problems and take advantage of a teachers personality, but I know as we become more experienced, we will know how to deal with that. I have yet to have any experiences at the high school level so I am a little apprehensive on how they will respond to me.
